Concussion Policy

A blow to the head or body causes a concussion, and a person does not have to be knocked unconscious to have a concussion.

Adopted May 22, 2020

Summary

This document outlines the Middletown Valley Athletic Association, Inc. (hereafter “MVAA”) policy for concussions.

The safety of our youth athletes is very important to the MVAA. As a Maryland youth sports organization, the MVAA directly aligns with the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) concussion guidelines and resources for athletes, coaches and parents/guardians.

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) includes the following language in every sport rulebook publication:

“Any player who exhibits signs, symptoms or behaviors consistent with a concussion such as loss of consciousness, headache, dizziness, confusion or balance problems shall be immediately removed from the game and shall not return to play until cleared by an appropriate health care professional.”

The MVAA has adopted the policy listed above as our standard for all recreational games, practices and any activity organized by an MVAA coach or any other person functioning on behalf of the MVAA.

Coach Training

We encourage all MVAA head and assistant coaches to annually review and complete the NFHS “Concussion in Sports” course.
