Background Screening Policy
Adopted May 22, 2020
Summary
This document outlines the Middletown Valley Athletic Association, Inc. (hereafter “MVAA”) background screening policy for volunteers participating in MVAA programs.
MVAA requires background screenings to determine eligibility for all MVAA sports Head Coaches (hereafter “candidates”) at a minimum of every two years. Candidates who refuse to participate in the background screening process or who satisfy disqualifying criteria will be immediately disqualified from consideration and notified by the MVAA Board of Directors.
Screening
MVAA recognizes background screening certification of candidates for MVAA sports where leagues and national governing bodies require and participate in national background screenings. Screening by a national sports body must be conducted at a minimum of every two years and the candidate must present proof of certification to the MVAA for record keeping.
For MVAA sports where leagues and national governing bodies do not require national background screening, MVAA will conduct, at a minimum of every two years, a background screening against the candidate. The background screening will be conducted at no cost to the candidate utilizing the Volunteer Screening product from the MVAA registration provider, SportsPilot. Candidates whose background screening results match the disqualifying offenses defined in this policy will be notified that they are disqualified and prohibited from serving as a volunteer for MVAA.
Appeals
Disqualified candidates may request an appeal in writing to the MVAA for an in-person review with the MVAA Executive Board and the MVAA Director of the sport the candidate is pursuing a volunteer position for.

MVAA aligns with National Recreation and Park Association (NPRA) guidelines for credentialing volunteers.
